For many flute students, I’ve found Skype to have the best audio quality for online flute lessons. After many interactions with music teachers and students who swear by Zoom, and after exploring the features included in Zoom, I’ve been influenced to spend more lesson time on Zoom – but am now moving back toward Skype for more lessons. I think the primary thing is to be conscious that different students have different devices and different internet connections, and so the video conferencing experience will vary from student to student.<\/p>\n

I recently read this article from a violinist,<\/a> which compared various platforms specifically for quality of music. This article specifically mentions distortion in the higher range of the violin, and better quality in the lower range. This was my “aha!” moment! No wonder other teachers of other instruments prefer other platforms! If you’re primarily in the low range, you’ll sound fine over Zoom!\u00a0<\/p>\n

I’ve been experimenting a lot recently – and I believe I’ll be going back to Skype for most students – though I just got an iPad and I hear FaceTime is pretty awesome – so stay tuned on that\u00a0 – but of course that’s only with students who have Apple products… The experiments continue!\u00a0<\/p>\n
