Sandra and I will be gathering our students (the under 18 crowd, that is) this coming Sunday, April 3, 2:00 PM, at the Congregational Church in Barre – that’s right behind the triangular green where Main Street makes a Y with 302. All are welcome! Feel free to email me for details!

Here are some pictures from last Friday’s musical “soiree”, again at the home of Christine Rousseau and her husband Lee.

Lee had put up lanterns lighting the path to their home – a lovely pathway to begin a lovely evening!

Sandra opted for our duet to be first on the performance list – oboe players with their persnickety reeds need to be allowed priority in these matters!

We played a few movements from William Grant Still’s “Miniatures” for flute, oboe and piano -

“I Ride an Old Paint,” “Adolorido,” and “A Frog Went  A-Courtin’ “

Sweet little set of arrangement of folk tunes, to start the evening on a light and relaxed note.

The day before the soiree, I was touched to receive an email from George – he was looking for pictures from last year’s soiree to be included in a slide presentation he was doing Friday afternoon: “Better Not Bigger” – about what really makes us happy, including music. George volunteered to play first among the students for the evening, breaking the ice and getting the evening rolling and off to a great start!

Our gracious hostess, Christine (right), with duo partner David.

A little piano duet before the Grand Finale group event. There’s Eric, our awesome accompanist, on the left.

The evening’s performance ended with a whole group event. We played a three part arrangement of Beethoven’s “Turkish March” followed by some jazzy blues. Sandra and I had decided that last year’s ending with Mary Alice Amidon’s “Joy Shall Come in the Morning” – a contemporary hymn – would be great as a traditional ending for the evening’s performance, so as of last Friday, that has become our official Musical Soiree finale – now including harmony Sandra has transposed for clarinet.

And then of course the also now traditional pot luck dessert and conversation following the performance! Looking forward to next year already!

Here are some pictures of our recent concerts at Heaton Woods supervised apartments and Mayo Nursing Home on July 2. Four students joined my daughter Mariah and I for a summer afternoon.

Emily and Jocelyn started us off with a few Suzuki tunes, accompanied by Mariah and I.

Jocelyn and Emily started things rolling with a few Suzuki tunes – Lightly Row, Aunt Rhody, and Allegro- accompanied by Mariah on harp. George and Cathy and I continued with some brief flute trio arrangements of portions of a few classical favorites: “Allegro” from Vivaldi’s “Spring,” the theme from “Swan Lake” by Tchaikowsky, “Hopak” by Moussorgsky, “Russian Sailor’s Dance” by Gliere, and “Largo” from “The New World Symphony” by Dvorak.

Cathy, George and I played a few trios from the adult flute choir.

Here's Cathy playing "Last Rose of Summer" accompanied by Mariah.

Cathy followed with a traditional Irish tune called “Last Rose of Summer,” accompanied by Mariah on harp. Then all the flutes joined together for “Long, Long Ago” in 4 part harmony.

East Hill Winds Spring Recital pictures from last Saturday! Sandra Cathey and her students joined my students a performing extravaganza at the Universalist Church in Barre. Students ranged in age from 6 to 18. Many thanks go again to Eliza Thomas for providing glorious piano accompaniment for our recitals for more years than we can keep track of. Below are some pictures of just a few of my students rehearsing with Eliza right before the performance.

Left and right are Lucinda, age 6, playing the Japanese folk song “Kagome.”

Below, Shams, 7, played “Lightly Row.”

Love these pictures as a great way to start my new “studio news” blog!

Sandra Cathey and I got together with a few of our adult students at the home of her recorder student, Christine.

It was a lovely evening, with much music making and amazing pot-luck dessert after!

A relaxed and fun way to enjoy music together and build confidence as performers while having a great time listening to and supporting one another!

Below, our beloved hostess, Christine, with her duo partner David:

And Sandra and I – the “East Hill Winds Duo!”

We ended the music making with a few pieces all together:

Wish we’d gotten some pictures of the desserts! Well, maybe next time! (You’ll have to use your imagination!!!!)
